I was at the 2023 American Heart Association EpiLifestyle Conference. I presented my research on residential segregation and hypertension risk in the #regardsstudy and my research on long term mortality and causes of death after VTE (blood clots) in the #aricstudy. Last picture was at the Vermont State House. I’m a volunteer for the American Heart Association Vermont Advocacy Committee. We were there to advocate for CPR funding and tobacco flavor bills. Happy to share my newest first-author research paper on D-dimer(a factor reflecting clotting and inflammation) and #hypertension in the REGARDS Study. The #REGARDSStudy is one of the largest and most diverse longitudinal studies on stroke and cognitive impairment in the U.S. In our study, we showed that elevated D-dimer was associated with a higher risk of hypertension. Several studies show elevated D-dimer is associated with a higher likelihood of severe #covid19, and some studies suggest people with #longcovid have elevated D-dimer. Some people who have been infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 can experience long-term effects from their infection,known as post-COVID conditions (PCC) or long COVID. What does the data say?Data from the Household Pulse Survey show among American adults who reported having COVID-19 in the past, nearly 1 in 5 are currently still having symptoms of long COVID. Research also shows that getting COVID more than once (reinfection) further increases risks of long COVID, death and hospitalization. Long COVID is disabling for many. The Kaiser Family Foundation reported that fewer than half of working age adults with long COVID who worked prior to infection work full-time after infection. Since of working-age adults have their health insurance coverage through an employer, getting long COVID potentially means losing your existing coverage and income. 2022 was a amazing and scary. Did a lot of introspection, dealt with pain, death and uncertainty but also had a lot of success. For 2023, I want to focus on self-care, joy, happiness and community. Here’s my long RECAP for 2022: - Created a professional website - Published 4 papers including a first-authored paper on coagulation/inflammation and risk of hypertension (will share more next year) and a paper on @blackincardio - Was selected as a Rising Star in Health Sciences by the University of Utah - Received an Early Career Investigator Award for my research on COVID-19 - Finally traveled to Tahoe for the Ten-Day seminar on the Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke. Grateful for travel awards from the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Vermont and the seminar funders (including the American Heart Association) - Pitched and moderated a Black In Cardio session at #AHA22. The session was on being a scientist in the social media age - Helped organize the 2022 African Stroke Conference. As a member (and current secretary) Cardiovascular Institute of Vermont Early Career Advisory Committee, I helped organize mentorship and elevator pitch events. - Co-lead the REGARDS Study Diabetes Working Group - Organized Twitter conversations with Congolese people in science, medicine and engineering - Saw la Traviate at the San Francisco Opera and met the star on the steps of the Opera. - Spent time with family and friends. - Set healthy boundaries - Continued my journey to healing but felt consequences of past traumatic events. #yearinreview #womeninscience #blackinstem #blackscientist #africanscience #congolesewoman #femmecongolaise #congo #postdoc #postdoclife
